Website Copywriter or Lyricist?

One of the best parts of being a freelance writer is continually finding out that I can do things I never thought were possible. As I don’t have a fixed job description I’m free to have a try at just about anything.

When a friend recently approached me about writing the lyric for a song, my initial reaction was ‘but I’m not a songwriter’. However, when I sat down with my trusty notebook and began to scribble I was surprised what came out.

I had an advantage because I was writing words to an existing tune, which actually had a well known lyric. My friend was getting married and was looking for a unique song to be performed in church while she and her new husband were signing the register.

They both loved a particular song (I’d better not say which one as I’m sure we were violating all sorts of copyrights) but it wasn’t really suitable for a wedding. They asked me to rewrite the lyric to make it personal to them and their relationship.

I’m happy to say I came up with something that the couple seemed happy with, and it was beautifully performed by some more of the bride’s friends during the service. It was wonderful to be able to play a part in the wedding ceremony without actually having to stand up there and perform myself.

What I’ve learned from the whole experience is that we shouldn’t constrict ourselves to those tasks we know we can accomplish, but should always be willing to have a go at something we think may just be out of reach.
